Eating Healthy on a Budget: How I Did a Whole Food Shopping Trip for Less Than $50

Image
The organic food trend has been on the rise for a while now, and for good reason. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or other harmful chemicals. They are also free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and are often considered to be more nutritious than conventionally grown produce. However, organic food can be more expensive than conventional food, which is why many people wonder whether it's necessary to buy everything organic. Today, I went to BJs and picked up a few basic staples. Out of the 11 items I bought, 4 items were not organic. While I usually try to buy as much organic food as possible, I don't stress too much about it if I can't find everything I need in the organic section. My personal philosophy is that if more than half of my diet is organic, then buying conventional at the moment is okay. There are some foods that are more important to buy organic than others. These are known as the "dirty do...

Wild salmon, green beans and farro

Image
Eating a well-balanced meal is essential for our health and wellbeing. Incorporating organic green beans, wild salmon, and organic farro into our dinner is a great way to ensure we are getting the necessary nutrients we need. But did you know that the order in which we eat our meal can also play a role in how our body digests and absorbs these nutrients? Starting with the greens, such as the organic green beans, is a great way to kickstart our digestion. Green beans are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate. They also contain fiber, which can help regulate our blood sugar levels and improve our digestive health. Eating our greens first can help stimulate our digestive enzymes and prepare our body for the rest of the meal. Next, we move on to the protein, such as the wild salmon. Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for our brain and heart health. It also contains high-quality protein, whi...

My thoughts on choosing organic products

Organic wholefoods are increasingly becoming a popular choice for health-conscious individuals. The reason for this is simple: organic wholefoods are grown and processed without the use of harmful pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In contrast, conventional foods are grown using chemicals that can have adverse effects on human health. Here are some reasons why buying organic wholefoods is a better option for your health: 1. No Pesticides Organic wholefoods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides. These chemicals have been linked to a host of health problems, including cancer, reproductive issues, and neurological disorders. By choosing organic wholefoods, you can avoid exposure to these harmful chemicals. 2. Better Soil Quality Organic wholefoods are grown in soil that is rich in nutrients and free from harmful chemicals. In contrast, conventional farming practices can deplete the soil of its natural nutrients, leading to poor crop y...

Oven Baked chicken, baked beans, quinoa with a cucumber tomato salad

Image
When it comes to chicken, there are many ways to cook it, but not all methods are created equal. Oven-baked crispy chicken thigh with bone-in, accompanied by baked beans, quinoa, and cucumber tomato salad, is a healthy and delicious meal that offers numerous health benefits compared to deep-fried chicken. Deep-fried chicken is often high in unhealthy fats and calories, which can contribute to weight gain and other health problems. In contrast, oven-baked chicken thigh is a healthier alternative as it reduces the amount of unhealthy fats, while still providing a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. The addition of baked beans, quinoa, and cucumber tomato salad to the meal enhances its nutritional value. Baked beans are high in fiber and plant-based protein, which contribute to a healthy digestive system and help to maintain a healthy weight. Quinoa is a gluten-free whole grain that is rich in protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, making it a nutritiou...

Some people try to avoid cooking with animal fats because they believe that these fats are unhealthy. However, there are a lot of benefits to cooking with animal fats. One of these benefits is that animal fats are healthier for your heart. For example, olive oil is high in monounsaturated fat which is good for your heart. This Sunday, my husband and I decided to go out for drinks this evening at @thelemonsqueezenewpaltz.  The duck wings went well with my drink of choice, Full Note. Our final stop was at @new_paltz_health_and_nutrition. Here, I found grains and pulses for an amazing value.  Lunch in New Paltz I can rate it 11 stars.
